Friday Harbour is a well protected anchorage and the hub of the San Juan Islands. Ferries depart from here to the mainland. We spent three days here enjoying all the pleasures on offer. For some reason we didn’t take many pictures.
We waited for a change in weather and then chose the right time to pass through the San Juan Channel. We anchored in Mackaye Harbour situated on the Northeast side of Juan de Fuca Strait. From here it is only twenty five miles across to the other side and our destination, Port Townsend.
We left at first light and the wind was calm for about the first ten miles. We motored along enjoying the beautiful views to the east. Later a delightful west wind came up and we were able to turn off the motor and blast along on beam reach all the way to Port Townsend. Of course as we approached a busy shipping lane intersection so also did a monster freighter. After contemplating trying to get across the lane before he got there, I took Yammy’s sage advice and gybed away in the opposite direction for about five minutes, a strategy which was surprisingly successful. Friday was a holiday and there was a succession of interesting sailboats heading off into the strait. We saw some majestic schooners under full sail as well a very speedy trimaran.

Early in the afternoon we arrived in Port Townsend and promptly went to a local brew pub.
