Reid Harbour, Stuart Island

Reid Harbour is as bombproof an anchorage as you are going to find during winter in the San Juans. Protected from the South and North and having a constant depth of 20 to 30 feet , it is a great place to be when the wintry winds are blasting down from the Fraser Estuary.
We were here for two nights and though we rode around on the anchor a lot I felt very secure.
Unlike some of the other Islands Stuart has a rural farmland feel to it. There is a great walk out to Turn Point Light that overlooks Haro Strait and Vancouver Island on the other side. We were the only boat there and had the marine park to ourselves.

Our final night it calmed down and we went to shore and make a fire of dry arbutus branches. That with a bottle of wine and a bag of taco chips made it a more than memorable occasion.

  1. I am getting tired of seeing myself in the same jacket in all photos over the past 3 plus months. Maybe time to go shopping?
